In Amerika nadert de campagne haar climax. Als vanouds gaan daar de kandidaten elkaar te lijf in ruwe debatten, <em>negative ads<\/em> en <em>dirty direct mail<\/em>. Volgt Nederland de VS? En geldt ook voor journalisten het <em>going dirty<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cDe winnaar zal niet zozeer degene zijn die overwint, als wel wie overleeft.\u201d Aldus \u00a0Washington-Postblogger Chris Cillizza op 31 juli in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/monde\/2012\/07\/31\/mitt-romney-et-barack-obama-entre-coups-bas-et-spots-cracra_836835\"><em>Lib\u00e9ration<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>We zitten bijna drie maanden verder, en misschien was Cillizza wat al te zwartgallig. Want mocht Mitt Romney op 6 november inderdaad tot president van de Verenigde Staten worden gekozen, dan heeft hij dat wellicht toch meer te danken aan de deplorabele staat van de economie en het redelijke gezicht dat hij wist op te zetten in zijn eerste debat met Obama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ras, religie &amp; economie<\/strong><br \/>\nHoewel\u2026 Eens te meer is (Bill) Clintons memorabele oneliner <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It%27s_the_economy,_stupid\"><em>It\u2019s the economy, stupid!<\/em><\/a> dit verkiezingsjaar ook van toepassing op het in de VS zo dominante <em>negative campaigning. <\/em>Religie (het mormoonse geloof van Romney) en ras (Obama schijnt zwart te zijn) zijn taboe, zo fatsoenlijk zijn campagnes in de VS weer wel.
